Kanoottimelat ovat yksilapaisia ja pituudeltaan yleensä 120-160cm pitkiä käyttäjästä ja käyttötarkoituksesta riippuen. Pääosa Suomessa myydyistä avokanoottimeloista on molemmin puolin symmetrisiä malleja, joita kokemattomankin on helppo käsitellä miettimättä miten päin lapa menee veteen vaikka puoli vaihtuukin. Yleisimmät mallit ovat ns. suoralla ja suht lyhyellä lavalla olevia malleja jotka toimivat kaikissa vesistöissä. Pidemmille retkille ja enemmän tasaiselle vedelle taittolapainen mela antaa lisäpotkua. Amerikassa perinteiset majavan- ja saukonhäntämelat (Beavertail ja ottertail paddles) ovat myös vähitellen yleistymässä Suomessa. Materiaalivaihtoehtoja löytyy monia, yleisimmin käytettyjä ovat muovilapaiset ja alumiinivartiset edulliset perusmelat, sekä lämpimät ja sirot puumelat, harvinaisempia ova hiilikuitu ja kevlar-rakenteiset melat, joista saadaan valmistettua höyhenenkeveitä, mutta silti kestäviä huippumeloja.
